Prof. Bisrat Hailemeskel

Prof. Bisrat Hailemeskel is one of the most accomplished Ethiopian pharmaceutical scientists of his generation—a full professor and vice chair at Howard University's College of Pharmacy, where he has built a distinguished career spanning clinical pharmacy, pharmaceutical education, research, international capacity building, and entrepreneurship over nearly three decades. Born and educated in Ethiopia, Prof. Bisrat pursued advanced clinical training in the United States and joined Howard University in 1997, one of America's most historic and prestigious historically Black universities. His ascent to full professorship with tenure reflects the depth of his academic contributions across medication use and misuse, traditional and herbal medicine, clinical pharmacy education, and HIV/AIDS-related pharmaceutical care. What distinguishes Prof. Bisrat as a remarkable Ethiopian figure, however, is not only his success abroad but also his sustained, concrete investment in building pharmaceutical science capacity back home. As Principal Investigator of the Howard–Addis Ababa University Twinning Partnership, he secured over a million dollars in US government funding to transform pharmacy education in Ethiopia toward patient care models. His work helped establish the first MSc and the first-ever PhD program in clinical pharmacy in Africa—a landmark contribution to the continent's health education infrastructure. He also founded Ethiopia's first Drug Information Center, a resource that continues to serve clinicians and students. Alongside his academic career, Prof. Bisrat has built a portfolio of three incorporated businesses in the State of Maryland—demonstrating that his vision extends beyond the university into the marketplace of ideas, health, and community development. His entrepreneurial ventures span natural health products, professional education, and real estate—reflecting the same breadth and drive that have defined his academic journey.
